Better Betta Care
One of the biggest reasons that so many people have Goldfish is because they are so very easy to take care of. You don’t even need a big aquarium, just a 1 gallon fish bowl will do.
There is another kind of fish that is just as easy to care for, and they to will bring you lots of happiness to watch. They are called Betta’s or, Siamese Fighting Fish. They have really beautiful colors and long fins and tails that flow through the water as they swim.
If you are super busy, don’t have time to care for a huge aquarium full of fish, [but would still like to have a pet fish], the Betta is for you !
Here’s how easy it is to have Betta’s …
Water Temperature …
You want the water to be about 82 F [28 C]
Clean Water …
In an aquarium, change at least a ¼ of the tanks water once a week. In an bowl change at least ½ of the water once a week. Let the tap water sit for about 1 day before you use it. Use a pH testing kit and get water to stay at about 7.0
Bowl / Tank Set-up …
Stay away from sharp rocks or stones. They could rip the Betta’s beautiful fins. The guys need to be by themselves, but the girls will get along with each other and, of course, with the guys. So you can have tank 1 - 1 guy, tank 2 - 1 guy, 2 girls or tank 3 - 3 girls.
Jumpers …
Betta’s like to jump! Leave the water level at least 2 in from the top. Some Betta owners put a lid on the tank ! If you do this make sure there is still air getting through. Betta’s will sometimes come up to the surface to get their oxygen.
Betta Friends …
Betta’s like other fish … just not other Betta’s ! Remember, they are also called Siamese fighting fish. Betta’s have been known to get angry when they see their own reflection in a mirror. Some good Betta friends are Loaches, Platies [moons] and Cory catfish. Just don’t fill your bowl or tank with too many fish. 1 fish for every gallon of water works the best. 1 gallon tank - 1 fish, 3 gallon tank - 3 fish.
Clean your Tank …
Never use soap or detergents to clean your tank. Just take out the rocks, or decorations, and use a toothbrush and warm water to scrub them.
any you may have. Use a kitchen baster to suck up any old food from the bottom of the tank.
Food …
Betta’s love live food like brine shrimp or bloodworms. They’ve also been known to like a good meal of very finely chopped vegetables like broccoli, carrots and soybeans.
