Smile ... you're on Canine Camera
Most dogs and cats have some kind of trouble with their teeth.
Things like bad breath, drooling, swollen red gums, changes in behaviour, not wanting to eat and a sore mouth are signs your dog or cat are having problems with their teeth.
But some dogs and cats with troubled teeth do not have any of these signs. That is why it is super important to take care of your dog and cat’s teeth every day with regular brushing. Keeping your pet’s mouth healthy can
make their life better and even help them live longer!
If you do not take care of your pet’s mouth, their teeth may fall out, their mouth can hurt really bad and they can even get sick in other parts of their body like the kidneys, liver and heart.
Here’s how you can help your dog and cat have healthy teeth:
Brush your pet’s teeth every day with pet toothpaste.
That’s right, there are special toothbrushes and toothpastes for dog’s and cat’s! These toothpastes are flavoured with chicken, beef or fish! If you are not sure how to brush your pet’s teeth ask your Mom or Dad to help you for the first few times .
Feed your pet plaque-reducing pet foods and treats
Using pet mouthwash and tooth gels helps prevent dental disease in your pet. Cats get cavities really easy, so fluoride gel should also be applied to their teeth once a week. Special mouth health solutions can be added to your pet’s drinking water to fight plaque and bad breath.
Some dog’s and cat’s have so much bad stuff stuck to their teeth they need to have a extra good cleaning at the Veterinarians.
Also, just like in humans, some dog’s teeth may need x-rays. X-rays let your Veterinarian see inside the tooth and also the bones in the jaw that the teeth are attached to.
If your dog or cat’s teeth are in really big trouble the vet might have to take the tooth out.
And remember to take care of your teeth too …
