Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan Malamute is from Alaska, USA. They belong to the Spitz group of dogs with a history going back 2,000 - 3,000 years ago to the Mahlemuits tribe of Alaska. They worked as sled dogs, in a group of at least 4, and would pull 100’s and even 1,000’s of pounds of stuff to villages and camps. They helped Admiral Byrd get to the South Pole and also helped miners who came to Alaska for the Gold Rush in 1896.
They grow to be 75 to 85 pounds and 23 to 26 inches tall.
They can do something really cool, actually really warm, with their super furry tail. In freezing cold weather, with blowing snow, they can curl up in the snow and wrap their tail around their nose and face !
They just love being with their humans, but don’t always obey your every command.
Most Malamutes are very quiet, not barking much at all. But they do make a sound all their own. It sounds like "woo woo" … like the sound Chewbacca made in the Star Wars movie. [The director of Star Wars, George Lucas, owned a Malamute named Indiana].
Malamutes also will howl and when they do, it sounds the same as a wolf.
