Chihuahua
The Chihuahua does more than star in TV commercials for Taco Bell! They love to be outside where they can run around. I guess we would move really fast too to make sure we didn’t get stepped on! They love to cuddle with you lots to stay warm. [They hate the cold and start to shiver, which is their way of saying, “Hug Me!”] And in the summer they love to chase insects! It’s like a meal to them … when you are as small as a Chihuahua a bug can look like a piece of candy does to you and me !
The Chihuahua is the oldest breed in America! It is from the country of Mexico and is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua. One of the first times that someone spoke about the Chihuahua was hundreds of years ago when a man named Christopher Columbus left Spain and discovered North America. When he was in Mexico he sent a letter to the King of Spain and wrote about “the tiny dog’. He must have taken a Chihuahua back to Europe with him because they have been very popular there for a long time.
The Chihuahua is also the smallest dog in the world! Some can stand on all four of their legs in a person’s hand! But don’t think that because they are small they don’t have attitude. The Chihuahua is known for havin’ a “big personality in a small package”. It’s important for us to remember that just because we aren’t all grown up yet, our opinion [what we think about things] is still super important. So don’t be afraid to answer a question in school, or tell your friends and family what you think about stuff.
